The Birth of Pickleball: History and Evolution
It might be new to you, but Pikleball goes all the way back to 1965. It was created on Bainbridge Island, Washington when three fathers – Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum – needed a game to keep their children entertained while on summer vacation. Little did they know that their random creation would evolve into a global sensation!
As the game grew, they refined the rules and scoring systems, ultimately shaping what we now recognize as pickleball.
In 1967, the first-ever permanent pickleball court was constructed.
In 1972, a corporation was established to safeguard and preserve the game’s originality. Fast forward to 1984, and the USA Pickleball Association came into existence to govern the sport.
Today, what initially began as a fun pieced-together activity has flourished into a worldwide phenomenon creating fun and enjoyment for millions and millions of people.
As the sport continues to evolve, one can only speculate about its future. Will it attain Olympic status? Will it surpass tennis in popularity? Only time will reveal the answers, but one thing is certain – pickleball’s extraordinary journey is not done yet!
Getting Started: Equipment and Court Setup
Playing pickleball is fairly simple and only requires the following equipment:
- A pickleball paddle
- A pickleball ball
- A net
- A court of specific dimensions
The court size for pickleball is 44 feet long and 20 feet wide, similar to a doubles badminton court. Finding a pickleball court near you is easier than ever, with many gyms, recreation centers, and even pop-up courts available. You can even play on tennis courts!
Since the growth, finding a court isn’t that hard anymore, but finding an AVAILABLE court is the challenge now! To help with that, you can create a DIY court in your own driveway with a portable net and some tape!
All-in-one pickleball starter kits are a great way to get into the game. These kits can be found at most sporting goods stores, major retailers like Target or Walmart, and online. They typically include pickleball paddles, balls, and a net, ensuring that you have everything you need to start playing this thrilling game.
Hey sometimes you need to get creative!
Mastering the Game: Basic Rules and Gameplay
Understanding the basic rules is key to fully enjoying pickleball. Here are the basic rules to keep in mind:
- Players hit the ball back and forth until one player misses. The ball can only bounce once on your side before you hit it.
- The serving team must serve underhand, making contact with the ball below the waist.
- In doubles, each player gets to serve, except for the beginning of the game.
- Only the serving team scores a point if they win. If the receiving team wins the point it is a side out.
- The receiving team must let the ball bounce once before returning it, as does the serving team. This is known as the two bounce rule.
One of the unique aspects of pickleball is the no-volley zone, also known as the “kitchen.” This seven-foot area around the net must be avoided when hitting the ball, unless it bounces. This is where all the “dinking” happens.
How to Keep Score In Pickleball: How Points Are Earned and Won
In pickleball, the scoring system is slightly different but still straightforward once you get the hang of it.
The game is usually played up to 11 points and you must win by at least two points. Scoring can only happen when serving. If the returning team wins the point, it is called a side-out.
The score is composed of three numbers representing the serving team’s score, the receiving team’s score, and the server number (either 1 or 2). For instance, if the score is announced as “4-3-2,” it means the serving team has 4 points, the receiving team has 3, and the second player in the serving team is serving. All doubles games start at 0-0-2.
Participating in Tournaments: Take Your Skills to the Next Level
Once you’ve mastered the basics and feel confident in your pickleball skills, you may want to consider participating in a tournament. Competing in pickleball tournaments is an awesome way to challenge yourself, meet other pickleball players, and experience the thrill of competitive play.
Tournaments are held frequently these days so you can find a local tournament relatively easy. The games are set up by age and skill level in most instances.
To prepare for a tournament, consider joining a local pickleball club or participating in friendly matches. You can even attend pickleball camps to help improve your skills and have a ton of fun!
Remember, the primary objective is to have fun and enjoy the game. Winning is just a bonus! As the pickleball community often says, “Keep calm and pickle on!”
